On the trip back to

Greenland, Leif’s ship rescued

20

several sailors who had lost

their ship in a wreck. People

thought it was lucky that

Leif’s ship found these sailors.

The Vikings began calling him

“Leif the Lucky” as a symbol

of their great respect for him.

When Leif finally arrived

in Greenland, he lived up to the promise he

had made to King Olaf. He began preaching

to the people of Greenland. Many of them

became Christians.

The Viking colony on Greenland began

to grow. More and more people had come to

live there. The lack of trees in Greenland for

building houses and ships became a problem.
